Book 2 Post 1
Road Out of Winter
Road Out of Winter by Alison Stine is a fascinating Cli-Fi novel. If you haven't heard of that, neither had I. It stands for climate fiction. I was initially drawn to the book because of the word "fiction." I have a huge preference for fiction, so it was a no-brainer for me. The plot sounded like a young adult novel that I would like to read on my own time. Although I was considering choosing another book because it was much shorter, I chose what I would actually enjoy reading (like the aspiring scholar I am). I was also interested in how the author would include themes of global warning/possibly the importance of being environmentally-friendly into a fiction novel.
After reading the beginning, my expectations for an engaging fiction story were met. The main character, Wylodine, was left alone by her mom to grow her mom's boyfriend's weed. Kinda weird. However, Wylodine feels a great responsibility to take care of this marijuana and continue selling it. But people are leaving. The setting of the story is rural Ohio in a town that has not had a proper summer (or spring) in over a year and is experiencing extraordinarily cold weather. While the book has not explained why this freeze has not gone away yet, the freeze is greatly affecting the town. Many people are moving south, including Wylodine's best friend. I suspect that Wylodine is soon going to flee from the frigid town as well (I mean the book is titled Road Out of Winter). I'm genuinely excited to read further.
Although I haven't read much, I was intrigued with the beginning. I like the style of writing Stine uses. It's easy to read, but still captivating. The concept of the novel is also very interesting, considering I've never even heard of Cli-Fi. It was also cool to see her talk about growing weed as I've never thought about what the life of a grower actually looks like. In summary, the entire concept of Road Out of Winter is fresh and original. It makes me curious to read more, and I'm excited to read another fiction novel after such a long time.
