Book 1 Post 1

Putting the Rabbit in the Hat Post 1

As I was perusing the list of books that was given to us, Putting the Rabbit in the Hat piqued my interest. This is an autobiography of Brian Cox who has had a successful acting career. While I haven't personally seen any of his work, the book blurb interested me because of how light-hearted it sounded. Considering the fact that it mentioned Brian losing his father to cancer and being raised by a mentally ill mother, this light tone is very impressive. It was this optimism that won me over, so I decided to read Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. I hope that through reading this book, I can gain a larger understanding and sensitivity of others' situations. I would like to feel inspired and driven from Brian Cox's amazing story. In addition, I would like to gain some insight as to how he became successful in the acting industry despite the fact that he grew up poor in Scotland. Overall, many different aspects of Brian Cox's story intrigued me over the others, so I chose to read his autobiography.

Putting the Rabbit in the Hat is a sad yet inspiring story. The life of Brian Cox is truly one of perseverance, and I've only read the beginning. I am still getting adjusting to all the Scottish slang and weird spellings that Cox uses. While it's somewhat hard to understand, I like the character it adds. Brian Cox writes the book as though he's talking to a friend, a quality which I greatly appreciate. Brian grew up extremely poor, living in a two bedroom "flat" (apartment, for those who don't know U.K. slang) with his two parents and four siblings. Misfortune soon arises when his father passes away from cancer and his mother is left to take care of them. While the content is sad, it does not seem like it until you reflect due to Cox's light-hearted tone. I also like how he sprinkles in a background of his career and name-drops working with other celebrities. Mr. Cox does not have a filter. If he is going to expose every actor like he exposed Steven Seagal, I am excited to read the rest of the book. I will keep you all updated on how the rest of the book goes, but I have high hopes.
