Who I Am Matters
Hello! My name is Brooke Hill and I am a freshman from Beaumont, Texas. For those of you who don’t know (which is probably most of you), Beaumont is located an hour and a half east of Houston, near the Louisiana/Texas border. It is a smaller city that surprisingly has some diversity, but not much. Right now, I am attending USC (obviously) through the World Bachelor in Business program. Next year, I will be moving to Hong Kong to embark on another adventure, this time even further from home. However, I studied in South Korea when I was sixteen so I am confident that things will be fine. With my business degree, I am not sure what I want to do yet. I am still exploring this broad world, but through internships and research, I am looking into paths such as fashion brokering, marketing, real estate, investment banking, and more.
It has been scary to grow up and start to see the similarities between myself and my parents. Like my mom, I think I am loud, extroverted, sometimes unfiltered, and bubbly. Like my dad, I can procrastinate, run late, and make witty/cringey dad jokes. However, I think I differ from my parents in my beliefs over certain issues, and I also think that I can process difficult situations and stay calm more often than them at times. They are great parents; they have instilled strong values and morals in me that I am extremely grateful for. So much so that I don't know whether I’m operating under their expectations or my own. I would say it is a combination of the two. While there are a couple unrealistic expectations that they wish of me, I feel that over the years, our expectations have meshed and adapted to create one set of expectations that I operate under.
One huge role model of mine is the South Korean boyband, BTS. While some might tease them for having fans that are only teenage girls, their fanbase is extremely diverse and the way in which they live their life with such high moral standards and public responsibility is inspiring. In particular, the leader Namjoon is a huge role model of mine in his thoughtful and valuable insight on situations. I want to live life like them in that they are passionate about what they do and try to do their best for themselves and everyone else around them.
Nature is something I wish I had always felt a deeper connection to. One animal I feel connected to is the dolphin. They are intelligent mammals that seem so free-spirited and happy. I would love to know what it feels like to glide through the ocean and jump from the waves. The most significant tree from my childhood is an oak tree at my elementary school’s park that had a long and low-hanging branch. It invited the children to rest from playing tag and sit on its thick branch. I have lots of memories of chatting with my friends about third grade drama while resting on its low-hanging branch.
